Future Financiers: Hosting Torrington’s After School Program!

At Points West Community Bank, we understand the importance of laying a strong foundation for the future of our community. That commitment extends to nurturing the understanding of our youngest citizens. Yesterday, we had the privilege of welcoming approximately 35 young people from the Torrington Practice After School Program for a visit to our bank.

The Practice After School Program, supported by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers, offers valuable enrichment to children, often without cost to their families. We recognize the significant role these programs play in strengthening our community’s well-being and are always pleased to support their efforts.

Our time together began with a thoughtful introduction from our own Cactus Covello. He shared insights into his position and outlined some foundational principles of bank etiquette, emphasizing respect for shared resources and processes. This helped set a steady tone for the day’s learning.

Following Cactus’s welcome, the students divided into smaller groups to observe different aspects of the bank’s operations:

  • Behind the Teller Line: One group joined Dawn to observe the practicalities of managing currency, from the efficiency of the cash and coin counting machines to the reliable operation of the pneumatic tube system. They also engaged in an exercise in understanding quantities, guessing the number of quarters in a bag.
  • Understanding Security: Another group accompanied Wheaton and Daniel for a look at the measures taken to safeguard resources and ensure security. They learned about the functions of security cameras and alarm systems, and observed the importance of height markers at the entry. A practical exercise involved recalling details about Cactus to understand the importance of careful observation in safeguarding information.
  • Currency & Careful Sorting: The remaining groups visited our boardroom, where they learned about the security features inherent in paper currency – an important aspect of managing financial resources responsibly. They also participated in a hands-on sorting exercise, using M&Ms to illustrate the principles of categorization, much like one might sort coins or other valuable items.

It was a meaningful day of engagement, offering these young individuals a glimpse into the prudent management of a community bank. We believe that fostering an early understanding of financial processes and the principles of stewardship is vital for the long-term prosperity of everyone.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Practice After School Program and the 21st Century Community Learning Centers for their dedicated efforts in providing these enriching experiences. Points West Community Bank remains steadfast in our commitment to supporting the educational journey and overall well-being of the youth in our community.
