Environmental & Outdoor

If you love being outside, you can help protect Colorado’s natural environment by volunteering with a nature conservation or wildlife protection organization. Here are four local nonprofits offering Fort Collins residents a chance to reconnect with nature and protect the environment we love.

Wildlands Restoration Volunteers (WRV) – Volunteer opportunities with WRV are anything but ordinary. With projects that range from a few hours commitment to multi-day campouts, you can help build new trails and restore beautiful sites across Colorado. Volunteers of all ages, abilities, and interests are welcome at WRV.

Bird Conservancy of the Rockies – If you have a passion for birds, nature, and science, the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies has volunteer opportunities for you. Sign up to receive volunteer training that will allow you to monitor bird populations, inspire others through community outreach, and assist at banding stations. Help preserve wildlife in the Front Range by volunteering with the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies.

Rocky Mountain Raptor Program (RMRP) – Don’t miss out on the rewarding experience of rescuing and rehabilitating birds of prey around Fort Collins. Hundreds of eagles, owls, hawks, and falcons that are injured or suffer illness each year are cared for and released back to the wild by RMRP. Volunteers are needed to help with animal care, educational programs, and day-to-day operations.

Friends of the Front Range Wildlife Refuges – Supporting the two largest national wildlife refuges in the Denver metro area, Rocky Mountain Arsenal and Rocky Flats, this organization supports local wildlife, connects the public with nature, and serves children’s environmental education needs. Volunteer opportunities include working at the gift shop, staffing community volunteer days, assisting with invasive species removal, and planting native species.

Social Services & Community Support

At PWCB, we believe people are the heart of our community. Supporting our youth, elderly, ill, and financially struggling neighbors helps strengthen our community. You can make a positive impact in your Colorado neighborhood by spending time giving back to these local organizations.

Volunteers of America Colorado (VOA) – Making a positive impact on your community is easy with VOA Colorado, a faith-based organization. VOA Colorado serves families, children, veterans, and older adults throughout the state. Volunteer opportunities include restocking the food pantry, meals on wheels, yard work, becoming a foster grandparent, and home safety upgrades. From building wheelchair ramps for seniors to providing school supplies for young children, VOA Colorado changes the lives of over nearly 100,000 people in-need each year.

United Way of Weld County – Give back to your neighborhood by volunteering in Weld County. With the United Way you can spend time assisting in neighborhood beautification projects, at the diaper bank and Superhero Run, with meal delivery, as a teaching or childcare assistant, and many other local opportunities. The United Way of Weld County offers such a wide array of volunteer opportunities in Greeley, Evans, and Eaton that you’re sure to find one that interests you.

UCHealth – UC Health hospital volunteers help provide comfort during stressful hospital visits by providing extraordinary care and support to patients, family members, guests, staff and fellow volunteers. Through a variety of opportunities in numerous hospital departments, volunteers give a personal touch that enriches the hospital experience. Hospital volunteers provide non-medical support through patient interaction, clerical work, guiding visitors, delivering flowers, and helping in the gift shop.

Youth Education & Mentorship

Help shape the future of the Fort Collins community by contributing to the growth and development of children in your area. Whether you’re sharing your passion for the arts or teaching life skills like cooking and laundry, volunteering with youth organizations helps pave the way to a brighter future in the Front Range.

Colorado Children’s Chorale – Do you believe that music has the power to transform lives? The Colorado Children’s Chorale provides performance training and music education to aid in the development of the whole child. Their performances enrich the lives of children, families and audiences while providing gratifying, life-changing experiences for their young performers. Help mentor and educate local youth by volunteering with the Colorado Children’s Chorale.

Front Range BEST – Help inspire the next generation of science and engineering professionals by volunteering as a mentor or event volunteer with BEST. An acronym for “Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology”, BEST’s goal is to engage, excite, and inspire students to pursue careers in engineering, science and technology through participation in a sports-like science and engineering-based robotics competition. Volunteers help middle and high school students design, build, test and compete in an annual robotics competition.

The Matthews House – The Matthews House works with families to provide a safe space for fostered youth, offering the resources and support needed to break free from cycles of poverty and abuse and move toward independence. Volunteers can help provide essential resources and offer coaching to youth, young adults, and families in Northern Colorado. The Matthews House provides opportunities to volunteer with kids and families, serve on a committee, or help out at events.

Veterans Organizations

Partnering with veterans volunteer programs in Northern Colorado is a wonderful way to express gratitude and honor those who served. Many veterans experience periods of isolation and loneliness as they adjust to civilian life, and volunteers can help by providing social connections, mentoring, and assisting with job skill training.

Salute Colorado — Veterans in Denver and Front Range communities can participate in a 2-year assistance program with Salute Colorado. Over the course of the two years, veterans are provided a mentor, get help setting goals, receive funding for professional development, and are invited to networking events. You can help veterans pursue their post-service career objectives by volunteering as a photographer or videographer, serving as a mentor, providing professional guidance and job skills training, or assisting with events and administrative tasks.

Colorado Veterans Project — With an aim to increase employment, career advancement, and entrepreneurship in the Colorado veteran population, Colorado Veterans Project helps both pre-veterans and veterans complete successful career transitions after military service. Volunteers are needed to assist with community outreach and multiple events throughout the year.

Soldiers’ Angels Denver Chapter — Help brighten a soldier’s or veteran’s day by volunteering for Soldiers’ Angels. By distributing food to veterans’ homes, planning social activities in the community and VA housing facility, photographing Soldiers’ Angels events, and providing support at the VA Medical Center, volunteers make a difference in the lives of service members, guardsmen, reservists, military families, and veterans of all eras.
